Stainless steel and brass wear down from water erosion much faster than ruby gemstones and high-quality ceramics. Slower erosion gives more consistent performance over a longer period of time. Some people are of the opinion that ruby and ceramic appear to clog less often from very fine particulates, such as calcium, due to the materials being smoother than stainless steel.
Ruby and Ceramic nozzles are mostly made of stainless steel and have center apertures made of either glass and ruby or ceramic.
- Ruby nozzles are identified by the green glass and red ruby center.
- Ceramic nozzles are identified by the white ceramic center.
- Stainless steel nozzles are solid metal with no distinguishably different center.
